Working out quantity is simple once you know your area. Measure the space you want to cover, and our quick calculator (and the worked examples below) will tell you exactly how many panels to order — in either size.
Everything comes down to your area in square metres (m²). Measure the width and height of the space you want to cover, in metres, and multiply them together. Then convert that area into panels:

Offcuts can't be reused, so a part-panel still counts as a whole one. Work out how many panels fit across the width (rounding up) and how many up the height (rounding up), then multiply. For example a 2m × 1.8m area is 3.6m², but you'd order 16 small tiles (4 across × 4 high) or 4 large panels (2 across × 2 high) — the calculator below does this for you.

Each dimension rounded up to whole panels — this already allows for offcut waste, so no extra needs adding.
Both sizes give the same coverage per square metre, so the choice is about handling and the area you're covering:
Easier to handle and post, and better for smaller or more detailed areas where you need to work around obstacles. More joins overall.
Cover large runs faster with fewer pieces and fewer joins. Ideal for long fences and big walls. A little bulkier to handle.
You can mix sizes on one project — large panels for the open runs, smaller tiles to fill around posts and edges.
Measure the width and height of the surface you'll cover — not the whole fence if you're only screening part of it. Note them in metres.
If you're screening for privacy from an upstairs window or raised deck, measure to the sightline you need to block, not just the fence height.

You can't buy part of a panel, so always round up. Spare offcuts are useful for filling thin spots and edges anyway.
