The complete guide to grant funding for football pitch perimeter fencing. Many clubs don’t realise how much money is available — or that there is no preferred supplier list, meaning you can use grant funding to purchase from The Outdoor Look right now.
The Football Foundation does not operate a preferred supplier list. Their own guidance states that clubs should "source quotes from a reputable dealer." This means your club can apply for a Football Foundation fencing grant and use it to purchase the Pro Pitch system from The Outdoor Look — right now, with no restrictions whatsoever. We provide all the specification documents needed to support your application, free of charge.
Two main grant streams are available to football clubs for pitch perimeter fencing. Both are well-established, well-funded programmes that have helped thousands of clubs across England.
The Football Foundation is the premier source of grassroots football facility funding in England, funded jointly by the Premier League, The FA and Sport England. Their fencing grant programme specifically covers pitch perimeter barriers, ball retention fencing, boundary fencing and gates.
The Premier League Stadium Fund provides capital grants to clubs at NLS Steps 1–6 and Women's Pyramid Tiers 1–4 to improve stadium and ground facilities. Erecting boundary and perimeter fencing is explicitly listed as an eligible project.
If your club is at Steps 1–6, you may be eligible for both. In most cases, start with the Football Foundation fencing grant — it’s simpler to apply for, faster to process, and specifically designed for this type of project. The Premier League Stadium Fund is better suited to larger, more complex capital projects where the total cost exceeds the Football Foundation’s maximum. Contact us and we’ll advise on which route is most appropriate for your club and budget.
The Football Foundation application process is straightforward. Here is exactly what to do, in the right order.
Football Foundation fencing grants are open to clubs and organisations across England where grassroots football is an integral part of what you offer — including affiliated clubs in the National League System (Steps 1–6), the Women's Football Pyramid (Tiers 1–4), and grassroots clubs below the NLS. Your club must be affiliated with your County FA. Confirm you are not already in receipt of an active Football Foundation fencing grant (maximum one application per season).
The Football Foundation requires a specification showing: total perimeter length, fence height, fence construction type, number and type of gates, and total cost. They also ask for two like-for-like quotations. Contact The Outdoor Look and we will provide our specification and quote free of charge — including a marked-up site plan if needed. We respond within 24 hours. Having a professional specification from a reputable supplier strengthens your application.
Planning consent is generally required only for fencing over 2 metres in height. At the Pro Pitch 1.1m height, planning permission is therefore usually not required in England under permitted development rights — but always confirm with your local planning authority before applying. The Football Foundation requires you to confirm planning permission status as part of the application — if it is required, you must have it in place before applying.
You will need: a site drawing or aerial photo showing the proposed fence location — our specification document — two like-for-like quotations — the total metre run, height and construction — number and type of gates — total project cost — planning permission confirmation — evidence of security of tenure — landlord's consent (if you do not own the site) — club bank details. The application is submitted online by the club Chair, Secretary or Treasurer.
Apply online via the Football Foundation portal at footballfoundation.org.uk. A thorough, detailed application with clear supporting documentation gets a faster decision. The Football Foundation typically makes decisions within 10 working days of receiving a complete application.
Once approved, you will receive a grant offer letter confirming the amount and conditions. At this point, place your order with The Outdoor Look. Do not order before receiving written grant approval — the Football Foundation will not accept retrospective applications and will not pay for work carried out before the grant is approved.
Once the fence is installed, submit your completion evidence to the Football Foundation — typically photos of the completed installation, invoices from the supplier, and any other evidence requested in your grant conditions. The grant is then paid to the club.
Use this checklist to make sure you have everything before submitting. We provide everything marked with an asterisk (*) free of charge.
The Football Foundation receives a high volume of applications, particularly in the second half of the season when clubs are considering summer ground improvements. Applications submitted earlier in the season tend to be processed more smoothly. If your club has a ground grading inspection coming up, allow sufficient time for the grant application, approval, order, and installation to be completed before the inspection date. This typically requires a minimum of 8–12 weeks from first enquiry to installation completion.
If your club is in the FA National League System (Steps 1–7), you are subject to FA Ground Grading requirements. The type of perimeter barrier required depends on your step:
Football Foundation funding is available to grassroots and NLS clubs across the pyramid where grassroots football is integral to the club — not just at the top. Many grassroots clubs are unaware that they can apply. Read our full FA Ground Grading Guide →
Yes — absolutely. The Football Foundation does not operate a preferred supplier list. Their guidance states clubs should "source quotes from a reputable dealer." There is no restriction on which supplier you use. We provide all the specification documents needed for your application free of charge.
The Football Foundation fencing grant covers up to 75% of the total project cost, with a maximum grant of £25,000. So on a £20,000 project, the Foundation could contribute up to £15,000 and your club would contribute at least £5,000. On a £10,000 project, the Foundation could contribute up to £7,500. The exact amount depends on your application and the Foundation’s assessment.
Yes. Because the grant cannot exceed 75% of the total project cost, your club must provide at least 25% of the cost — either from club funds or from partnership funding sourced elsewhere. For example, on a £10,000 project the Foundation could fund up to £7,500 and the club would need to find at least £2,500. The Premier League Stadium Fund has a lower minimum club contribution of 10%.
Not necessarily, but you must demonstrate security of tenure. For a grant up to £25,000 you need freehold ownership or a lease for at least 5 years from the date of the grant offer; for grants over £25,000 the period is 10 years. If you do not own the site, you will also need written landlord's consent to the works (unless the landlord is a joint applicant). Confirm your tenure position before applying.
The Football Foundation typically makes decisions within 10 working days of receiving a complete application. Allow additional time to prepare your application, obtain quotes and supporting documents, and for the grant conditions to be agreed. In total, allow a minimum of 4–6 weeks from starting the application to receiving approval, and then additional time for order, delivery and installation.
Yes — applications can be made to replace existing fencing that does not meet current requirements, or to extend existing fencing to cover the full perimeter. The key requirement is that the proposed work results in a compliant, permanent pitch perimeter barrier.
The Football Foundation will provide feedback on unsuccessful applications. Common reasons for rejection include incomplete applications, lack of supporting documentation, or grounds that already have compliant fencing. Contact us and we will help you understand what is needed and support a reapplication.
Yes — but through different funding routes. Rugby union clubs should look at the RFU Grant Finder and Sport England. Rugby league clubs should look at Sport England and the National Lottery Awards for All programme. See the Rugby Union funding guide → or Rugby League funding guide →
