⚠ Check your run-off with the RFL before you set the line
Rugby league run-off requirements are set by the RFL and by competition-specific ground criteria, and they are not the same as football's 1.83m to 2.25m. Do not set a rugby league barrier to a football setback. Confirm the required distance for your competition with the RFL or your county association before pegging out, and remember the in-goal areas add depth at each end. We will set the barrier to whatever distance you confirm.

Why rugby league clubs install a perimeter barrier
A permanent barrier separates the playing area from spectators, protects the pitch, and gives the ground a professional presentation that reflects on the club and the sport. Rugby league is a collision sport and players cross the touchline at speed with no prospect of stopping, so what they meet at the end of the run-off matters. The football funds are closed to rugby league clubs

⚠ Setting out a rugby league barrier
A rugby league field of play measures 100m between try lines and 68m wide, with in-goal areas adding a further 6m to 11m at each end. Measure from the dead-ball line, not the try line — forgetting the in-goals is the most common way clubs under-order. On run-off distance, confirm the requirement for your competition with the RFL or your county association before setting the line; it is materially wider than football and varies by level.

Gate Options
Recommended gate configuration for a rugby league ground
As standard: 2 × 3.0m double gates for machinery and emergency vehicle access, and 2 × 1.5m single gates for players and match officials. Grounds with interchange benches and technical areas usually want an additional single gate adjacent to each. Position gates clear of the in-goals and away from the corners. Single gate £500, double gate £1,000, both ex VAT.

Rugby League Club Level Guide — The RFL Pyramid
The British rugby league pyramid runs from Super League through the Championship and into the National Community Rugby League. Understanding your level helps you choose the right specification and identify funding.
How the pyramid works after the 2026 restructure
Super League expanded to 14 clubs. The Championship merged with the former League One to create a 20-club second tier. Below the professional game, the old National Conference League was replaced by the National Community Rugby League (NCRL) — the National Premier League, National League One, five regional National Conference divisions, and Regional Leagues below that.
There is no RFL approval scheme for fencing
No governing body in rugby league operates an approval, endorsement or certification scheme for perimeter fencing products, and no supplier is "RFL approved". What applies is the RFL's ground criteria for your competition, and at licensed grounds the Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds. A product can be specified to meet those; it cannot be approved by them.

Unsure which level you are in after the restructure?
The pyramid changed significantly in 2026. If your club played in the old National Conference League it will now sit in one of the NCRL competitions. Contact your county or regional rugby league association to confirm your exact division before assuming a specification.

Pricing by RFL Level — Per Linear Metre
All prices ex VAT. The worked figures below use a full-size ground: 100m between try lines, 8m in-goal at each end, 68m wide, with the barrier set 5m clear of the playing area on all sides — a fence line of 126m × 78m, a gross perimeter of 408 metres and 397m of fencing once gate modules are deducted.

We have used a 5m run-off and 8m in-goals as a working assumption for the illustration. Confirm the run-off requirement for your competition with the RFL or your county association and measure your own in-goal depth, because both change the metre count materially. As a guide, every extra metre of run-off adds roughly 8 metres to the perimeter; every extra metre of in-goal depth adds about 4 metres. Send us your actual dimensions and we will quote to those.
How the perimeter is calculated
Field of play 100m between try lines, plus 8m in-goal at each end = 116m. Plus 5m clear at each end = 126m. Width 68m plus 5m each side = 78m. Gross perimeter = (126 + 78) × 2 = 408m. Gate modules are then deducted, not added, because each gate occupies part of the run rather than extending it — two 3.0m doubles and two 1.5m singles take out 11.3m, leaving 397m of fence. Installation
The system is designed to be installed by any competent, organised team. Every supply-only order includes a printed installation guide. The full method with dimensions is on our installation guide page.
⚠ Safety first
Installation should only be carried out by skilled, competent personnel. Wear PPE including protective gloves and appropriate footwear, and scan for buried services before digging. Use only genuine Norvale Sport components — substituting third-party parts voids the 15-year warranty. If in doubt, choose supply & install.
Order enough concrete
Each post hole takes approximately 85kg of concrete — four to five 20kg bags. On a 397m perimeter of about 159 posts, that is close to 13.5 tonnes. Check the arithmetic before delivery day.
Site survey & mark-out
Establish the fence line at the run-off distance confirmed for your competition, measured from the edge of the playing surface and including the in-goals at each end. Mark post positions at 2,500mm centres. Confirm gate positions, keeping them clear of the in-goals and away from the corners.
Dig post holes
Dig 300mm diameter holes to 750mm deep. Consistent depth is what keeps the rail line level. An auger is strongly recommended — a rugby league perimeter is around 159 holes.
Set posts in concrete
Lay a 150mm concrete base and stand the post on it at 600mm embedment, leaving 1,200mm above ground. Fill the surround to 150mm below ground level, check plumb and line, then leave undisturbed a minimum of 24 hours. Backfill the top 150mm with soil once cured.
Install rails
Slide rails into the mortise holes — three per bay, engaged to the full 38.1mm tenon. Leave a 10–12mm expansion gap between rail sections at each post. PVCu moves with temperature and a run fitted tight in January will bow in July.
Install mesh panels
Panels clip into the pre-drilled holes in the rails. No additional fixings or specialist tools needed. Work bay by bay.
Fit gates
Gate posts are doubled up — two side by side at each hinge and latch position. Allow 2,024mm for a single module and 3,637mm for a double. Hinges are pre-fitted; fit latches and drop bolts on site. Check every gate swings, latches and that drop bolts engage.
Final inspection
Walk the perimeter. Check rails seated with the correct expansion gap, panels fully home, gates working. Measure the run-off on all four sides from the edge of the playing surface and record it, and confirm no gap is left between the barrier and any spectator standing area.

These are independent test reports and a factory audit, not a product certification scheme — no such scheme exists for pitch perimeter fencing, and any supplier claiming their product is "certified" or "approved" by a governing body should be asked to produce the certificate. Our system is specified to meet the pitch perimeter barrier guidance in the Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds, the crowd safety reference used at licensed grounds. No governing body operates an approval scheme for fencing products.

How far from the pitch should the barrier be?
Further than football, and you should confirm the exact figure rather than assume one. Run-off requirements in rugby league are set by the RFL and by competition-specific ground criteria, and they vary by level. What is certain is that a football setback of 1.83m or 2.25m is not appropriate. Confirm the requirement for your competition with the RFL or your county association, then send us the figure and we will set the barrier to it.
Do I include the in-goal areas when measuring?
Yes, and forgetting to is the most common error. A rugby league field of play is 100m between try lines, with in-goal areas adding a further 6m to 11m at each end. Measure dead-ball line to dead-ball line, then add the run-off on all four sides. A ground with 8m in-goals and a 5m run-off needs around 44 metres more fencing than a football pitch.
Does the RFL require clubs to have perimeter fencing?
At Super League and Championship level a permanent perimeter barrier is an expected part of professional ground standards, and licensed grounds work to the Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds. In the National Community Rugby League and below there is no single prescriptive mandate, but a permanent barrier improves safety, presentation and grant prospects. There is no RFL approval scheme for fencing products and no supplier is RFL approved.

The NCRL was launched by the RFL in 2026, replacing the National Conference League. It comprises the National Premier League as the top amateur tier, National League One, five regional National Conference divisions, and Regional Leagues below that. If your club played in the NCL it will now sit in one of the NCRL competitions — contact your county association to confirm your division.
What funding is available to rugby league clubs?
Not the football routes — the Premier League Stadium Fund and the Football Foundation are both closed to rugby league. The realistic routes are Sport England, National Lottery Awards for All, RFL facility support through the Community Game Services team, and local authority sources. Your county rugby league association is the right first call.
What are the three fence systems?

Do you install across the whole UK?
Supply is UK-wide — we deliver anywhere in the country, with delivery itemised at £500 flat with Moffett off-load. Our managed supply & install service currently covers the North of England and is expanding, which takes in most of the rugby league heartlands. Do we need planning permission?
At 1.1m barrier height, planning permission is generally not required in England under permitted development rights. Confirm with your local planning authority in writing before installation and keep the confirmation — some funders require evidence of it before approving a grant.
What warranty does the product carry?
A 15-year product warranty, covering manufacturing defects and material failure, valid when installed using genuine Norvale Sport components throughout.
Funding Your Rugby League Club Fencing
Several grant streams are open to rugby league clubs for facility improvements including perimeter fencing. The football routes are not among them.

If you have read our football pages, note that the Premier League Stadium Fund and the Football Foundation are both football-only. Neither is open to a rugby league club at any level. The routes below are the ones that apply.
Can clubs use grant funding to buy from us?
Yes. There is no exclusive preferred supplier list on any of these routes. We provide the full specification document, marked-up site plan, itemised quote and schedule of works needed to support an application, free of charge with any enquiry. To be clear about our role: we provide the paperwork — we do not secure funding and have no influence over the decision.
