It won't rust, rot or corrode the way steel or timber can, so a black powder-coated aluminium balustrade keeps its clean finish for years with only occasional cleaning. Load tested for UK homes

Our aluminium balustrade system is built around 75mm square posts with a finished guarding height of 1100mm. It has been load tested to the domestic (Category A) barrier loads in BS 6180:2011 and PD 6688-1-1, on level runs and 35° stairs at the full 1,829mm span. It passed the 0.36 kN/m line load at the top of the barrier, the 0.5 kN/m² infill load and the 0.25 kN point load, all within the 25mm deflection limit, and its ultimate failure load was more than 9 times the domestic design load. Picket spacing is 96.5mm, so a 100mm sphere cannot pass through. The full load test report (TOL-LTS-001) is available to download. As with any balustrade, the finished installation also depends on correct assembly and fixing to a suitable structural surface.

How long do aluminium balustrades last?

Aluminium balustrades are built to last for many years with very little upkeep. Because the aluminium is powder-coated, it won't rust, rot or corrode the way timber or steel can, so it holds its finish and strength through UK weather year after year. With occasional cleaning, you can expect a long service life outdoors.

Are aluminium balustrades suitable for coastal areas?

Yes. Aluminium is naturally corrosion-resistant, and the powder-coated finish adds a further protective layer, making it an excellent choice for coastal and exposed locations where salt air would quickly damage steel or timber. The powder coating has passed 1,000 hours of neutral salt spray testing (ASTM B117). In coastal areas we recommend rinsing the balustrade down roughly once a month to remove salt build-up and keep it looking its best.

Do aluminium balustrades require maintenance?

Very little. Rinse the balustrade down around twice a year with warm, soapy water, check and re-tighten any screws or fixings occasionally, and in coastal areas rinse monthly to remove salt. Avoid pressure washers and harsh chemicals, as these can damage the powder-coated finish. That's all that's needed to keep it looking good and performing well.

Can I install aluminium balustrades myself?

Yes — our aluminium balustrade system is designed to be DIY-friendly. It comes flat-packed and ready to assemble, with the stainless steel screws and fixings needed to put the rails together included. Ground and wall fixings aren't supplied, as the right fixing depends on the surface you're fixing into. The rails can be cut down on site to fit, so you'll need basic tools and a metal-cutting saw for any trimming, and each post fixes to a solid structural surface. What colours are available for aluminium balustrades?

Our aluminium balustrade system is supplied in a black powder-coated finish (RAL 9017), giving a clean, modern look that suits both contemporary and traditional outdoor spaces. The powder-coated finish is hard-wearing and colour-stable, so it keeps its appearance without fading or needing repainting. We do not offer grey, anthracite, silver, white or any other colour.

Are aluminium balustrades more expensive than other materials?

Aluminium can have a slightly higher upfront cost than some timber options, but it works out more cost-effective over time. Because it doesn't rust, rot or need repainting, there are no ongoing maintenance or replacement costs — unlike timber, which needs regular treatment, or steel, which can corrode. For a long-lasting, low-maintenance outdoor balustrade, aluminium offers excellent long-term value.

Is the aluminium balustrade suitable for UK homes?

Yes. Our aluminium balustrade has been load tested to the domestic (Category A) barrier loads in BS 6180:2011 and PD 6688-1-1, and is suitable for barriers in and around single-family homes in line with BS 6180:2011. Installed correctly, it gives a finished guarding height of 1100mm, with picket spacing of 96.5mm so a 100mm sphere cannot pass through.
