Semi-Frameless Glass Balustrades: Clear Views with Structural Support

A semi-frameless glass balustrade pairs slim stainless steel posts with toughened glass panels held between them by discreet clamps — most of what you see is glass, with just enough structure to carry the load. It's the most versatile and cost-effective glass balustrade configuration we sell: the posts do the structural work, so the glass can be thinner, the installation is more forgiving, and the system adapts to decking, patios, gardens, balconies and stairs.

How the Semi-Frameless System Works

Round 42.4mm stainless steel posts fix down through base plates (with covers to conceal the fixings), and D-shape clamps on the posts grip the glass panels between them. Posts come with clamps positioned for their job: end posts, mid posts and corner posts, plus blank posts — supplied without clamps — for stepped ground, so you can position the clamps yourself and keep the glass lines level across a change. Post caps finish the tops.

The glass is 10mm toughened safety glass, cut to order for your panel sizes, with laminated glass available if your project requires it. Because the posts carry the load, the system doesn't need the thick structural glass that channel and spigot installations use — which is a large part of why semi-frameless offers the best value per metre in glass balustrades.

Black or Satin — And What the Steel Grades Mean

The range comes in two finishes with an honest difference between them. The black system is 304 stainless steel with a protective powder coating — the coating provides the outdoor weather resistance along with the contemporary matt-black look. The satin system is uncoated 316 marine-grade stainless steel, where the steel itself resists corrosion, making it the pick for coastal and poolside sites. Both are designed for outdoor UK use, and both carry our 10-year warranty.

The Semi-Frameless Range

Start with the semi-frameless glass balustrade system in black — the complete kit of posts, clamps, base covers, post caps and glass — or the satin version in 316 stainless steel. Need access through the balustrade? The glass gate kit adds a self-closing gate with hinge and latch that matches the system — a favourite for pool surrounds and enclosed decks.

Every component is also available individually for repairs, extensions and custom layouts: mid posts, end posts, corner posts, blank posts, D-shape clamps and post caps, in both finishes.

Where Semi-Frameless Works Best

Decking: the posts fix to timber joists or reinforced composite deck structure, and the glass keeps the garden in view from every seat — the most popular semi-frameless application, and a natural pairing with our composite decking.

Gardens and patios: define levels and boundaries without visually dividing the space. At patio heights the system is quick to install and easy on the budget.

Balconies and terraces: a slim structural line around the edge protects the drop while the glass preserves the outlook.

Stairs: posts follow the pitch of the stairs with glass infill between them, and a compliant handrail can be added where required — talk to the team about stair layouts before ordering.

Building Regulations, Plainly

The system is designed in line with BS 6180:2011. The key requirements: guarding must be at least 1100mm high where an external drop exceeds 600mm (balconies, terraces, raised decking); for stairs and internal landings the minimum is typically 900mm measured from the pitch line; no gap in the balustrade may allow a 100mm sphere to pass; and domestic balustrades must resist a 0.36 kN per metre horizontal load. Compliance for your specific project depends on the right specification and correct installation — check anything safety-critical with your builder or building control, and our team will help you specify correctly.

Buying Your Semi-Frameless Glass Balustrade

The black kit is the place to start — send your measurements through the quote form or call 01282 526428 and we'll confirm the posts, clamps and glass panel layout your run needs, priced as one kit. Glass is cut to order: custom sizes take around 3–4 weeks, stocked panes 3–10 days, with glass deliveries scheduled in advance for safe offloading. Frequently Asked Questions

What is a semi-frameless glass balustrade?

A glass balustrade where slim stainless steel posts carry the structural load and toughened glass panels sit between them, held by clamps. You get predominantly-glass views with the reassurance and value of a post-supported system — the middle ground between a fully framed balustrade and structural-glass systems.

What glass does the system use?

10mm toughened safety glass, cut to order for your exact panel sizes, with laminated glass available if your project requires it. Because the posts carry the load, semi-frameless doesn't need the thick laminated structural glass that post-free systems use.

Can I install it on composite decking?

Yes — the key requirement is adequate structure beneath each post position, which usually means reinforced joists under composite boards. Posts must fix into solid structural material, not the boards alone. We provide installation guidance for decking and can advise on joist reinforcement.

Does it need a handrail?

Not always. Where the glass specification and structural performance meet the requirements, semi-frameless balustrades can be installed without a separate handrail; on staircases, a continuous graspable handrail is required by building regulations. Ask the team about your specific layout.

Is there a gate for the system?

Yes — the glass gate kit matches the system with a hinged, latching glass gate, popular for pool surrounds, enclosed decks and anywhere you need access through the balustrade.

How much does a semi-frameless glass balustrade cost?

Semi-frameless is typically the best-value glass balustrade configuration, because thinner glass and simpler fixings keep the cost per metre down compared with post-free structural glass systems.
