Our aluminium balustrade system is built around 75mm square posts with a finished guarding height of 1100mm, designed in line with BS 6180:2011 — the British Standard for barriers in and around buildings. Picket spacing is 96.5mm, within the requirement that a 100mm sphere cannot pass through. As full compliance also depends on correct installation for your setting, we'd always recommend confirming the requirements for your project.

How long do aluminium balustrades last?

Aluminium balustrades are built to last for many years with very little upkeep. Because the aluminium is powder-coated, it won't rust, rot or corrode the way timber or steel can, so it holds its finish and strength through UK weather year after year. With occasional cleaning, you can expect a long service life outdoors.

Are aluminium balustrades suitable for coastal areas?

Yes. Aluminium is naturally corrosion-resistant, and the powder-coated finish adds a further protective layer, making it an excellent choice for coastal and exposed locations where salt air would quickly damage steel or timber. In coastal areas we recommend rinsing the balustrade down roughly once a month to remove salt build-up and keep it looking its best.

Do aluminium balustrades require maintenance?

Very little. Rinse the balustrade down around twice a year with warm, soapy water, check and re-tighten any screws or fixings occasionally, and in coastal areas rinse monthly to remove salt. Avoid pressure washers and harsh chemicals, as these can damage the powder-coated finish. That's all that's needed to keep it looking good and performing well.

Can I install aluminium balustrades myself?

Yes — our aluminium balustrade system is designed to be DIY-friendly. It comes flat-packed and ready to assemble, with the stainless steel screws and fixings needed to put the rails together included. Ground and wall fixings aren't supplied, as the right fixing depends on the surface you're fixing into. The rails can be cut down on site to fit, so you'll need basic tools and a metal-cutting saw for any trimming, and each post fixes to a solid structural surface.
